Currently located centrally right next to Stadium MRT. This 1,708 seater theatre is the renowned venue for notable international acts such as Les Miserables, Cats, Chicago the Musical, Miss Saigon and Phantom of the Opera. It has housed concerts, ceremonial functions, university convocations and many more. From 1986 to 2000, the Kallang Theatre hosted the annual National Day Rally.
Former Prime Ministers, the late Lee Kuan Yew and Goh Chok Tong held their National Day Rallies at the theatre. To this day, the room used by the Prime Ministers – the “Lee Kuan Yew Room” as it is called, remains as one of the best kept rooms in the building.
The Kallang Theatre took a four year hiatus in March 2007. Before re-opening the theatre in 2011, the new management, Asia Arts & Culture Pte Ltd. invested about S$1.5 mil in renovations which included the installation of a brand new audio and lighting system.
The opening took off with the maiden local musical “Singapura - The Lion City”. Recent acts that have performed at the Kallang Theatre include Dream Theater, Mr. Big, Jayesslee, Sam Tsui and Sungha Jung to add.
The stage has a proscenium width of 15m and an area of 252 sq m. It is equipped with up-to-date lighting and sound equipment, and has an electronically operated orchestra pit. The two-levelled auditorium and backstage areas are fully air conditioned.
Other facilities within the Kallang Theatre include 10 dressing rooms, 2 large foyers VIP rooms, function rooms, Loading/unloading bay and an in-house carpark with a capacity of 200 cars lots.
It is conveniently located opposite the new Singapore Sports Hub and has the Stadium MRT Station right at its doorstep.
